Check Your Home for These Potential Problems

Maintaining a home can be a full time job. It often seems that things fall apart far quicker than we can put them back together. Staying on top of minor jobs can keep them from snowballing into larger problems. Even some bigger problems can be addressed by homeowners, preventing costly repairs and insurance claims.

Keeping filters changed in heating and air conditioning units, regularly checking smoke alarm batteries and replacing them when necessary and cleaning out chimneys are all things that can be put off for far too long. It is a good idea to sit down with your calendar once a year and schedule a day to do these things. Some people remind themselves to do these important checks and changes twice per year when the time changes.

Mold is another silent problem that can turn into a home disaster. If you find mold in your home it may not be cause for panic. If caught and done away with in time, it doesn’t have to be a disaster. If you find mold in your home, try to find the source of moisture causing it. This is most often caused by a leaky roof or plumbing problems. First fix the source of moisture. Then tackle the mold or mildew with a concentration of half bleach and half water. Let it sit for about 15 minutes and scrub to remove. It may be necessary to prime and paint over the mold or mildew area, but be sure you kill it all with bleach first.

Drafty windows are another problem that can sneak up on homeowners. If air is getting through the windows, moisture is too. You will have a far higher bill to heat and cool your home, and moisture can rot walls. If the problem is a seal around the window, it may be possible to seal it up with caulk. If this does not solve the problem, consult a professional.
