Easy Color Around Your Yard

If you want to add color to your yard but you lack a green thumb, there are some techniques for adding seasonal color without too much effort and expense. With just a few simple tips, you can add attractive color that can keep your yard slightly throughout the growing season.

Choose just a few spots in your yard where a splash of color would be visible and easy to get to. Clear away grass or other plants. Be sure not to damage bark or tree trunks during this process. If you do not want to do a lot of digging, create a raised bed with bricks, rocks, railroad ties or plastic garden lining and fill it with top soil. Place gardening plastic over the top of the soil. If you are planting near trees, be careful not to place soil or mulch around the trunk. This encourages pests and decay that can kill the tree.

Once your areas have been prepared, select plants from your local nursery or home improvement center. If you don’t want to plant again every year, select perennial plants. Make sure they are tall enough to be seen from the street. Choose about four different plants for each area where you are planting. What you will be looking for is plants that bloom at different times during the season. An early spring bloomer, late spring bloomer, summer bloomer and fall bloomer for each area will provide you year round color in each area of your yard.

When planting, only cut as much of the protective gardening plastic as you have to. Use an X so that you can roll it back in place when you are done planting. Place mulch over the top and keep them watered.
